Journal Notes: The Odd World of Pre-Pesach Meals

It's almost Pesach.  The time to clean out the cupboards and make sure to be chametz free on time. During Pesach, Jews have certain foods made with grains that we refrain from eating in memory of when we left Egypt and didn't have time to let our dough rise.  Instead we ate a flat bread that was made quickly: similar to a tortilla. Most Jews eat matzah, a hard cracker like bread.  I follow Sephardic customs where we make our own and we get to enjoy soft matzah.

There is so much spiritual significance that comes from this cleaning.  It is a time that is good for introspection.  A time to consider what habits and traits we picked up that may have infected the whole batch.  Ones that made us puff up with self ego.  And it is a time to celebrate places where humility reigned and to strengthen those traits.

Threre is so much to do while we think about such things.  Clean the house and cars, finish laundry, get the garbage out, and empty the vaccum cleaner.  And of course clean the kitchen and do food prep.  For me it is fairly easy as I avoid the 5 grains: wheat, spelt, rye, oat, and barley anyway.  But I still go through and make sure there are no 10 year old cans of food laying around.  Or those GF muffins, like the one below, that were cooked in a pan my mom uses to make regular muffins in, get eaten in time.
Makes for some interesting pickings a few days before Pesach. Like today, smoked salmon on seaweed snacks, berries, and a GF muffin.

Well, lunch is almost over.  Off to my friend's to make a few Pesach goodies. Like a GF shortcake.  Maybe I will have a recipe for that to post soon.

Have a safe and kosher Pesach!
